Finding a Church Home

Why should we attend church or even just a home group?  Suprisingly, church isn’t a creation for you to be a member of a club, to be a part of a clique, to claim a status or to pay your weekly dues so you don’t look bad.  Church was actually designed by God so that you may serve others.

As a baby Christian you go to church so that others who have made themselves available can serve you.  They help you grow, hold your hand and guide towards the right path, they pick you up as you learn to walk.  You go to be taught the word and get connected with others who can be a support to you.  But there comes a time when you are no longer in need of milk, a time when you need meat.

Hebrews 5:12 “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”

There will be a time when you ought to be teaching, serving and making yourself available to others. Giving instead of taking.

Philippians 2:1-11 “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,”

When we make ourselves available we find that God can use us in various ways. Sometimes we may have a gift or talent that may be of use to the congregation or just one person.  We may have the amount time to fill an area in need of volunteers.  We may have a testimony that really speaks to someone that has shared the same experiences.  We might have been blessed financially in a way that we can give to those in need.  You never know just how God will use you, but you greatly decrease the chances when you don’t connect with others.

Ephesians 4:11-16 “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,”

1 Peter 4:10-11 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

Some of us have been given a gift of teaching and authority and it is our responsibility to shepherd His flock and guide them.  If you have that gift, God gave it to you for a reason and He means for you to use it.

Acts 20:28 “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”

You won’t find in the Bible anywhere that tells you have to go to church, but you will find that God has made it perfectly clear that we are to be a support to one another by guiding, meeting, exhorting, admonishing, teaching and serving the body of Christ.  After all, WE are the true church!  The body of Christ was meant to be in unity, not in different denominations or buildings so what better way to come together as one that than finding a way to work together in a church or home group!

Hebrews 10:25 “Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
