Putting on the Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-18 "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

What does it mean to put the armor of God on and how does this pertain to us as we EQUIP ourselves?

I just love how God relates so many things in the bible to battles or competition.  I think it really speaks to how He desires us to be BOLD and strong, fierce and valiant.  In the above verse, God specifically speaks to how the things He has given us to be EQUIPPED in battle are like putting on full armor before going out to war.  It is this armor that helps us to stand strong against the enemy and to be protected against anything he may use to harm or destroy us.

2 Corinthians 10:3- For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

One thing that really stood out to me is that it says even after you have done everything to stand your ground, to keep standing!  I just get this image of a stern faced warrior bracing himself against all the attacks not once flinching or turning away.  We are called to stay and fight, to stand our ground and not give up!  To persevere even when we have done everything!  How often have we fought a battle and grew weary and gave in?  How often have we seen the enemy coming and we ran from the fight only to have to fight again?  God doesn't want that from us, He wants us to instead turn to the things He has equipped us with so that we may find strength when we have none left!

So what exactly does each peice of armor stand for and how do they EQUIP us for battle?
