Trinity Doctrine, Is It Biblical?

Whenever the Trinity comes to mind, a person simply thinks that GOD is three separate beings, therefore making HIM three GODS. Many Christians struggle with this idea, and for some it may cause their faith in GOD to waiver. Let’s break it down so that we have a better understanding of how it works. There is one GOD that is comprised of three divine persons: GOD THE FATHER, THE Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit. In scriptures, whenever you see the word GOD anywhere, it always refers to GOD the FATHER. In the old testament whenever you see LORD in all caps, it refers to GOD the FATHER. This is because Jews and no one else knows HIS Personal name, which some spell as YHWH. So, english translations use the word LORD in all caps in the place of YHWH. In the new testament if you see the WORD Lord, it most always refers to Christ. If you see the word GOD in the new testament, it refers to GOD the FATHER. This is how you can distinguish between the SON and the FATHER and the SPIRIT.

I think a lot of us struggle with the fact that if Jesus is GOD, how can HE pray to HIMSELF? HE was actually praying to GOD the father. Christ had to give up HIS GODLY status and became flesh. HE was still GOD because HE did things only GOD could do, like Heal, forgive and so forth. It’s just that HE gave up HIS GODLY status. So, like all humans at the time, HE was obedient in that HE, like other Jews prayed to the FATHER. So this is how and why HE prayed to GOD the father.

The word trinity actually comes from the Latin word trinitas and it means three. This word appears no where in the scriptures. However, the concept is in the scriptures. It means that all three divine persons that comprise GOD are each fully GOD. Basically each one is fully GOD but with three separate Roles. GOD the Father sent HIS Son Jesus (GOD the Son) to die for our sins. The SPIRIT, which is also fully GOD is the comforter, which also leads us and guides us in all truth. To further break things down, let’s start from the beginning. In the beginning was the WORD and that WORD was with GOD and the WORD was GOD (St. John 1:1). This no doubt refers to Jesus Christ because in the 14th verse it states that the WORD became flesh and dwelt among us. So whenever it says that Jesus was GOD in the beginning, it simply means HE was not GOD the Father in the Beginning, but HE was with GOD the father in the beginning. In other words HE was GOD in the beginning in that He shared GOD’s divine nature and glory and essence. HE still and always will have that same GODLY Essence and divinity and GODLY Nature that GOD the Father and the SPIRIT has. Whenever GOD the father spoke through the patriarchs in the old testament, HE HIMSELF would come down in the form of theophanies, which are visible physical representations of GOD the FATHER. He dwelt inside of a cloud and pillar of fire for the israelites. Therefore HIS glory was shielded from man. Whenever HIS Son Jesus came and dwelt among men, that same GLORY manifested through Christ. GOD literally manifested HIMSELF through GOD the Son. This is true because Jesus tells Phillip that anyone who has seen HIM has seen the Father in St. John 14:9. It doesn’t mean that Jesus is GOD the FATHER, it means that GOD THE FATHER Manifested HIMSELF through Christ. This also means that Christ shares the same divine nature and essence as GOD the FATHER, thus giving HIM the same GODLIKE Qualities as the FATHER.

In the beginning when GOD said LET US MAKE MAN IN OUR IMAGE in Genesis 1:26, HE was talking to Jesus. At the same time, the SPIRIT OF GOD OR THE HOLY SPIRIT hovered over the waters according to Genesis 1:2. We are also told that in Genesis 19:24, right before GOD destroyed Sodom and Gomarah, HE rained down fire from the LORD out of Heaven. This could only mean that GOD the FATHER sent down fire from GOD the Son out of Heaven. Colossians 2:9 tells us that in Christ, all the fullness of Deity or Godhead (divine nature or GODLY ESSENCE) dwells in bodily form. This means that since Christ now has a physical glorified spiritual body in Heaven, the GODLY ESSENCE AND DIVINE NATURE of GOD resides in the Human nature of Christ. I say this because since Christ now has a glorified body in Heaven, HE IS FOREVER THE GOD-MAN. GOD literally dwells through Christ forever and always.

Colossians 1:15 tells us that HE is the image of the invisible GOD and firstborn of all creation. Let’s break this down for a better understanding. Since GOD the FATHER is a SPIRIT, HE is invisible to all mankind, unless HE manifests HIMSELF into a form in which we can see HIM as HE did in the old testament inside of the cloud and pillar of fire. That was GOD but HE has to manifest HIMSELF in a form in which we can see HIM. And since HE is a SPIRIT, HE is invisible to us. Jesus is the image of the invisible GOD. This means that HE takes on the exact likeness and exact nature of GOD the FATHER. This can also be found in Hebrews 1:3. When the WORD says that HE is the firstborn of all creation it does not mean HE HIMSELF is created. In greek, first born translates from prototokos which signifies priority. In Ancient Near East Cultures, first born most often times referred to rank, not birth order. This means that the first born therefore possessed and inherited things such as leadership. So due to Christ’s first born status, it means HE is above all creation. It does not mean, however, that HE was created. HE has always been the eternal Son. Therefore all three persons of the TRINITY are divine but distinct from one another based on their roles to mankind. They communicate with each other. Think of it as GOD having three centers of self-consciousness but at the same time HE is one BEING. We know this because scripture tells us in Isiah 45:5 that HE is the LORD and there is no other GOD besides HIM.

HE also stated that HE shares HIS GLORY WITH NO OTHER in Isiah 42:8. But we know that Jesus shared GLORY with the FATHER in the beginning according to St. John 17:5. Since GOD stated HE shares HIS glory with no other, but Jesus stated HE shared GOD’s glory in the beginning, this means they are equally GOD. In addition, Isaiah the prophet sees Jesus sitting on a throne in a vision according to Isiah 6:1 In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. HE was seeing a vision of Jesus in HIS glory. How do we know this was Jesus? St. John 12:41 These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him. Isiah was seeing Jesus’ GLORY. He did not nor was HE able to see GOD the Father at that particular time. The HOLY SPIRIT is also GOD and possess the same GODLY NATURE and ESSENCE as the FATHER and the SON. The SPIRIT is actually referred to as HE not an it. According to Job 33:4, 4 The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Psalm 104:30 states -30 When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

The analogy I like using to express the trinity better is the water analogy. Let’s say you have some water from a river. The water in the river represents GOD. Take that same water, and pour it into a cup for something you are going to use it for, that represents Jesus, and take the same water from the river and pour into another cup for something else. That’s the SPIRIT. This means they are still all GOD but yet distinct with separate roles and separate from one another but yet collectively one. They all share the same qualities, attributes, power, and they all have the same mind and think and know the same things. Jesus could read people’s thoughts and GOD can do the same. The SPIRIT can also do these same things.
